CYNICS may argue that Mukesh Ambani, Asia's richest man's decision to take a 66 percent pay cut to "set a personal example of moderation" after India's government called for austerity in salaries of executives is pointless because he still makes more money than many average people will make in their lifetime.

They would be missing the point. It takes a big person to decide to do away with a two-thirds of their income, regardless of what the figure is.

Corporate South Africa can take a cue from Ambani. Company executives tend to escape the scrutiny that government is always under. They tend to give themselves fat salaries and bonuses even when they run their companies to the ground.

Ambani is a businessman, let us see which South African business executive can follow his example and practise what they find so easy to preach to the already hard-pressed workers.
