A 66-YEAR-OLD man is expected to appear in the Eshowe magistrate's court tomorrow for allegedly killing a local councillor, KwaZulu-Natal police said yesterday.

Mkhetheni Makhoba allegedly shot and killed his neighbour, 29-year-old councillor Mdumiseni Ngema, in Mandeni on September 20, said Senior Superintendent Jay Naicker.

Ngema was near the alleged killer's home that evening, waiting to meet someone, when Makhoba demanded to know what he was doing there.

He allegedly fired two shots at Ngema, one of which struck him in the head. Children found the councillor's body in the veld the next morning.

On Wednesday Makhoba was arrested and a 9mm pistol confiscated and sent for ballistic testing. He appeared in the Nynoni magistrate's court on Friday.

His case was postponed to tomorrow for his bail application. - Sapa
