DOCTORS at the Voortrekker Hospital in Mokopane yesterday refused to attend to patients - in protest against the sacking of one of their colleagues.

They were angry with the institution's chief executive, Tiny Kekana, who had apparently dismissed the hospital's clinical services manager, known as Dr Ramathuba, without following proper procedure.

The doctors also accused Kekana of ignoring them when they wanted to voice concerns on administrative matters.

The matter came to a head when about 30 doctors staged a sit-in at Kekana's office to demand an explanation for Ramathuba firing.

The police were called in to defuse tensions as the doctors allegedly threatened to continue with the sit-in until Kekana responded "positively". - Frank Maponya
