RIET did not live up to its motto to "Protect the right of women, children, disabled and homeless" when a group of about 250 refugees from Somalia and the DRC, amongthem women and children, were thrown out of its premises.

RIET did not live up to its motto to "Protect the right of women, children, disabled and homeless" when a group of about 250 refugees from Somalia and the DRC, amongthem women and children, were thrown out of its premises.

Riet (Rural Institute for Education Training) is on the Old Randfontein Estates Gold Mine along a road through Randfontein and Krugersdorp .

Makeshift tents have been set up outside the Riet premises on the R28 Road. There is no sanitation and running water. Women cross the road into the bushes to relieve themselves.

This has been their home for the past four months. There are about 30 children, and two four-day old babies. They were shown the door on Tuesday and spent the night on the road. - Story and photos by Bafana Mahlangu
