A TOTAL of 221 people were arrested in Johannesburg at the weekend for crimes ranging from fraud to drug-dealing.

They were nabbed during a crime-combating operation from Friday night to yesterday morning, Captain Bhekizizwe Mavundla said yesterday.

"Morpho-touch (fingerprint scanning machines) identified one of the arrested people as a wanted suspect in a Bedfordview theft case. Others were caught with cocaine and dagga," he said.

People were also arrested for theft, assault, robbery and shoplifting. The operation took place in Hillbrow, Braamfontein, Houghton, Killarney, Berea and Joubert Park.

"Police reservists and community sector patrol groups and guards at residential properties were involved and this contributed positively to more arrests,", Mavundla said. - Sapa
