WASHINGTON - A former White House official was to be sentenced yesterday for stealing about R6million from a government programme that promotes democracy in Cuba.

Felipe Sixto pleaded guilty in December to theft from the Centre for a Free Cuba.

Sixto quit his job as a special assistant to former president George Bush after learning that the centre was beginning legal action against him.

Sixto acknowledged overcharging the centre when purchasing radios and flashlights with federal funds. - Sapa-AP
