The first of nine provincial heats of the Anglo American and Sowetan Young Communicators Awards takes place in Nelspruit in Mpumalanga on Saturday.

This crucial youth development programme is supported by all nine provincial education departments. Senior officials of the departments help coordinate public-speaking workshops, provincial eliminations and accompany the provincial champions to the finals.

As a part of the youth development activity of the Aggrey Klaaste Nation Building Foundation - and Anglo American's most prominent corporate social investment and responsibility project - the awards seek to:

l Nurture future leaders by helping to improve participants' presentation and oral communication skills;

l Encourage participants' proficiency in English, the generally accepted language of business and academia;

l Encourage a pioneering spirit among young South Africans;

l Embrace the nation-building concept;

l Encourage young people to address key issues facing their communities and the country, and to find solutions to these issues;

l Prepare South Africa's future leaders for the professional working environment and l Nurture assertiveness and confidence among the youth. - Victor Mecoamere
