MALABO - Shooting rang out across parts of Equatorial Guinea's capital Malabo early yesterday and continued for several hours before calm returned to the city, residents said.

Former colonial power Spain's foreign ministry said President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo's government had ruled out a coup d'etat.

"It seems more like a criminal act than something political. The government of Equatorial Guinea has ruled out a coup d'etat.

At the moment, the situation is calm," a Spanish foreign ministry spokesman said. - Reuters
