The ANC's Gwede Mantashe challenged the business community to invest in education.

Speaking at the launch of the Moses Kotane Institute in Durban yesterday, he said something had gone wrong, with the result that only a limited number of professors of information technology existed in South Africa 15 years into democracy.

The institute will offer courses in IT, philosophy, science, politics and mathematics.

Kotane was a former ANC treasurer-general and general secretary of the SACP.

"I want to challenge businesspeople to invest in this institute. I have in the past challenged businessmen like Patrice Motsepe and Tokyo Sexwale and [have] asked them to do something to help black people, especially in the townships and rural areas, and I make the same call again."
