A Soweto security guard and four other men were arrested yesterday in connection with the gruesome "necklace" death of a young man last week.

The deceased, believed to have been between 20 and 30 years old, was dies when tyres doused with petrol were placed on his body and set alight. His charred remains were found on an open veld near a garage in Zondi.

The security guard allegedly supplied the gang with information and guns.

The "necklace" method was prevalent during the political upheavals in the 1980s.

Those suspected of being apartheid collaborators or izimpimpi were killed by this method.

Police spokesman Inspector Kay Makhubele said the deceased was allegedly a member of a syndicate that robbed garages in the township.

Four others were arrested in Mapetla and another in Carletonville on the West Rand.
