Nineteen people, including a headman and several schoolchildren from Umhlanga village in Bizana, were arrested following allegations of malicious damage to property.

This comes after the release of two suspects, Zamuxolo and Fezile Memela, who were accused of raping and murdering their widowed relative, Nokhanya Memela.

She was attacked at her home by two suspects who gang-raped and hacked and stabbed her to death.

The two men were arrested as key suspects in connection with the incident. They were found not guilty by the Port St Johns regional court last month.

Enraged by the court's decision, members of the community toyi-toyied outside the men's homes.

Police spokesman Superintendent Mzikisi Fatyela said: "They were arrested for malicious damage to property.

"Windows and doors of the house belonging to the former suspects were broken."
