This was said by Ruth Benjamin- Swales , auditor-general at Ernst and Young.
"Women today are stepping up and taking on highly visible leadership roles to cement the assertion that the modern-day woman's place is in the boardroom.
"The Broad-based Black Economic Empowerment initiative has been a stimulus to encourage women to actively participate in the economy. But the minimal representation is a cause for concern."
According to research by the Business Women's Association, only 19,5percent of executive managers are women and of these, only 13,6percent are directors and 6,6percent CEOs and chairmen of boards.
Benjamin-Swales said female executives ought to form forums where they could meet and share experiences and challenges in order to support one another.
"There is a need for women to participate in various initiatives that will assist them in their daily corporate lives. It can get lonely for them up there."
