I am writing to express my surprise that there are people who are still as narrow-minded as your reader Maggie Hoskins and your columnist Themba Molefe.
What both fail to point out is the low standard of our soccer. When Orlando Pirates played Manchester United, I hung my head in shame. That wasn't football.
The Pirates' youngsters kept running aimlessly. I was sure that Kaizer Chiefs would beat them, and they did. The only reason there were so many United fans at the stadiums was because they believe in and are satisfied with the level of football constantly displayed.
Why should being a South African compel one to root for a useless team? When Chiefs and Pirates start upping their game surely we'll witness changes in the stands?
What were Kaizer Motaung and Irvin Khoza thinking when they came up with the Vodacom Challenge idea anyway? South African teams can't even go past Zamalek, and they fool themselves into thinking they can beat United.
And we have the likes of Molefe and Hoskins lambasting people for appreciating an exciting team of professional footballers. I'm proudly South African but I have better things to do than to root for useless teams.
