Police have shot, wounded and arrested a 24-year-old thug who is allegedly part of a six-member gang that robs people of their cellphones and wages.

Captain Thozama Solani said the suspect was shot after he pointed a firearm at police in a bid to resist arrest near his home in Zwelitsha, near King William's Town in Eastern Cape, on Saturday.

The police recovered a police firearm from him that the gang had stolen during a spate of house break-ins in the area. Solani said the suspect was released from prison on July 10 after armed robbery and housebreaking charges against him were withdrawn.

The man, now under police guard in hospital, will appear in the King William's Town magistrate's court on charges of armed robbery and house breaking. - Sapa
