Absolom Morifi miraculously escaped death when his VW Jetta was crushed under a truck that dragged his vehicle along the N1 south near Rivonia yesterday evening.

"Thanks God I am alive," Morifi, 49, shouted soon after his 30-minute ordeal.

"I prayed a lot while trapped in my vehicle under the truck."

The busy afternoon peak-hour traffic came to a standstill for almost two hours after the careering truck, whose brakes had failed, wrecked 25 cars.

"I called Jesus name when I saw my vehicle going under the truck," Morifi said.

The staunch Christian told Sowetan he regularly donated money to his church and at one stage he surrendered one of his life policies in order to channel the money to his parish.

"I am really lucky to have survived and I know Jesus heard my prayers."

Only one motorist was critically injured in the accident and two others are in a stable condition in hospital.
