If the ANC Youth League has its way, the country will return to the discarded ANC policy of nationalisation.

At its national congress at Nasrec in Johannesburg that ended on Monday, the ANCYL proposed a nationalisation programme that would see control and ownership of strategic sectors of the economy such as extraction, production, petroleum, minerals, metal, iron-ore, steel, coal, water, marine resources and land fall under the state.

It said the state must also own and control airports and harbours, energy production and other strategic infrastructure. Banks should also be nationalised, the ANCYL said.

The ANC has come under sharp criticism from its allies on the left for its Growth Employment and Redistribution (Gear) strategy that saw massive privatisation. The league wants Gear to be reviewed. - Eric Naki
