STOCKHOLM - Former UN secretary-general Kofi Annan, pictured, has been awarded the 2008 Tallberg leadership prize by a Swedish forum that brings together world leaders to discuss global challenges.

The Tallberg Foundation says Annan was chosen for remaining "true to his principled pragmatism" during his 1997-2006 tenure as head of the world body. He joined the UN in 1962.

Swedish King Carl XVI Gustaf will present the US$83,600 ( R656000) award to Annan in a ceremony late yesterday. The Tallberg Leadership Award for Principled Pragmatism is generally awarded yearly for outstanding global leadership. The previous laureate, in 2006, was former BP chief executive John Browne. - Sapa-AP
