Inspector Cyril Khumalo said a VW Polo overturned and a Citroen travelling behind crashed into it.
"A man and a woman travelling in the Polo were killed instantly and the two people in the Citroen escaped with minor injuries."
They were both taken to Alberton Hospital for treatment.
Police have opened an inquest docket. The N3 to Durban near Alberton was closed to traffic.
"Emergency services are busy clearing the scene and the road should be opened soon," said Khumalo. - Sapa
