The number of black chartered accountants in South Africa increased by 14,4percent in the year to March to 3560 from 3113 out of a total of 27047 during the last week.

The number of black chartered accountants in South Africa increased by 14,4percent in the year to March to 3560 from 3113 out of a total of 27047 during the last week.

Commenting on the increase in black accountants, Edward Makwana, said: "It shows that were are getting there."

He said though there was an increase, black people's entry into the profession needed to be much faster without compromising the quality of training.

Women CAs increased to 6707 in March 2008 from 6183 at the same time
