A Durban octogenarian was burnt to death in her home at the weekend.

Police yesterday said they had begun questioning the victim's family in connection with the incident.

Police spokesman Edmund Singh said Ponniamma Moodley was in her Domino Crescent home in Westcliff, Chatsworth, when it was gutted by fire.

Moodley, 85, was rushed to RK Khan Hospital, where she later died from burn wounds.

Hospital officials informed police of the incident on Saturday after suspicions of foul play arose.

Police subsequently opened an inquest docket.

"The police have now questioned the daughter and granddaughter of the deceased, but no arrests have been made," said Singh.

Fire department divisional commander Alfred Newman said he did not have details of the fire. - Sapa
