"It is exciting, but hard because it is our first time in Grade 4, and we have to take notes every time we learn something new in all our subjects.

"For example, in natural sciences, we are writing about matter and phases of matter.

"You can tell the difference between the foundation phase and the intermediate phase. In the foundation phase, we only had three subjects and these are: life skills, literacy and numeracy.

"These subjects were easy to understand.

But in the intermediate phase, there are many subjects.

"In this higher grade, we do Afrikaans, life orientation, natural sciences, social sciences, geography, history, arts and culture, mathematics, English and English spelling.

"Last year we were only doing three subjects. It was fun. This year is different.

"Now you can understand how hard it is in the intermediate phase, so far ..."

lLusanda Nkosi is a pupil at Princess Primary School in Johannesburg.
