January showed the traditional rebound in vehicle sales from December, especially for pricier cars that buyers tend to hold off for New Year registration dates to get better resale prices later.
Last month's new car sales jumped 17percent to 30483 units from December, boosted by six times more Mercedes C-Class and three times more BMW 3-Series leaving showrooms.
New car sales were nearly 15 percent down from January last year, National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa showed.
