Echoes of 1976 reverberate at Hoërskool Ermelo.

It's an Afrikaans-language high school that has been resisting attempts by the Education Department to introduce English instruction for more than 100 black pupils.

The principal has been suspended and the school governing body has lost a high court case opposing the move. But the new pupils are still warehoused in the school hall until the department provides suitable books and teachers.

We understand the school is trying to retain a culture built up over decades. But it is a government-funded facility and cannot use language to exclude black children.

We've had one revolution over Afrikaans instruction - and that battle has already been won.
