Accidents continued to claim lives on national roads, despite appeals by authorities to motorists to drive carefully.

Three people died in a head-on collision on the E72 between Chalumna and East London, Eastern Cape, on Christmas Day.

This was after a Toyota Corolla, travelling from the direction of East London, and a Honda sedan travelling from Port Elizabeth collided head-on.

The Corolla driver, one of his five passengers and a female passenger in the Honda, died on the spot.

l In Gauteng, 14 passengers were injured when two taxis collided on the Grasmere road on Christmas Eve.

All 14 were taken to Chris Hani-Baragwanath Hospital.

lSeven people were injured when a taxi and a car collided on Marlboro Drive in Johannesburg. Five occupants of the taxi and two from the sedan sustained slight injuries.

l A pedestrian was knocked down on Hendrik Potgieter Road, off Doreen Road in Roodepoort. The woman pedestrian sustained a serious head injury.

No fatalities were reported in Gauteng until yesterday.

Meanwhile, Johannesburg metro police said they had arrested another 45 motorists at roadblocks in Soweto and Melville on Christmas Eve for drunk driving.
