It is 11.30am and newspaper and television cameramen have already positioned themselves inside High Court 2D to take pictures of Mongezi Jingxela, the country's worst serial rapist.

At 11.50am the man they have eagerly been waiting for appears from the holding cells with his head covered in a brown jacket.

"Besijola nababantu, they were my girlfriends," Jingxela protests before he takes his seat.

At 11.50 Judge George Maluleke enters the court and reads the sentence.

Jingxela, 39, remains seated with his head between the legs during the entire reading of the sentence.

At 12.45 Jingxela crawls back to the cells to wait to be taken to prison where he will spend the rest of his life.

Speaking to Sowetan outside the court, Portia Mokoto said: "No punishment would equal what this man did."

"I hope his sentence would serve as a lesson for other men out there," said Themba Nkambule.
