A Germiston resident was arrested after he lied to the police about his cellphone being stolen in order to claim from insurance, Germiston police said yesterday.

Captain Steady Nawa said the 36-year-old man reported his cellphone stolen on Tuesday. He claimed a young boy had grabbed it from him at the Golden Walk Mall in Germiston.

After being questioned by the investigating officer, the man admitted he had lied. He confessed that he had lost his cellphone and reported it stolen to claim from insurance.

He was arrested for perjury and was due to appear in the Germiston magistrate's court today.

Police are appealing to the public to desist from opening false cases because they will be jailed. - Sapa
