Top South African runner Jacob Mazibuko has warned fellow athletes to ensure that they pay tax to avoid a possible legal battle with the South African Revenue Service.

This was after the popular Mazibuko was served with papers to pay Sars a total of R15000 within six months or have his property attached.

"I received a letter from the taxman in December that I owed them R15 000 for the monies that I won since 2001," said Mazibuko.

"The tax man instructed me that I had to pay within six months. To avoid losing my property, I'm now paying Sars R1 500 per month because that's what I could afford. I won't be able to pay the required R15 000 within the required six months.

"I just wanted to warn the other athletes to check that they do not owe the taxman because the consequences will be terrible.

"It was only after I got a permanent job that the taxman tracked me down. I was under the impression my club and most of the race organisers were deducting tax money."

He urged other athletes to engage experts to handle their tax affairs and approach their local Sars offices for assistance.
