Every person in the UK produces half a ton of household rubbish every year, which means that the whole country produces 30 million tons each year. That is enough to fill rubbish bins stretching from the Earth to the Moon! But household rubbish makes up only 7 percent of the total rubbish for the year. The rest comes from mining and quarrying (114 million tons); agriculture (86 million tons); demolition and construction - bricks, soil, etc (80 million tons); industrial waste (55 million tons); dredged spoils from rivers and harbours (34 million tons); commercial waste (25 million tons); and sewage (4 million tons).
