Police fired rubber bullets to disperse large crowds of protesters in the North West province after they blockaded several main roads yesterday.

Disgruntled residents have been protesting in the past three weeks over water supply shortages. Superintendent Louis Jacobs said the crowds began gathering at Welbedacht village at 3am, and by 10am they became violent.

"When attempts to disperse them failed, police fired rubber bullets. There were no injuries or arrests," Jacobs said. - Sapa
