This reality sunk home the other day when a heist gang wounded four security guards at a pension pay-point at Umbumbulu, south of Durban, before escaping with more than R4million.

It is unfortunate that South Africa, renowned for its technological prowess, is still dispensing pensions using archaic methods. Exposing pensioners to such dangers is heartless.

Yet, not so long ago, we were told the South African Social Security Agency, formed to streamline the payment of pensioners, would make life easier for the aged.
