The deputy manager of the East London Hospital Complex, Dr Nokuzola Ntshona, will appear in court on drunken driving charges this month, Eastern Cape police said yesterday.

Captain Thozama Solani said Ntshona was arrested last week after patrolling police stopped her and found her intoxicated in Stutterheim, in the Eastern Cape.

"They stopped her because she was doing zigzags on the road," Solani said.

Ntshona was arrested and detained overnight after refusing to take a blood test. She was currently out on R500 bail and was expected to appear in the Stutterheim magistrate's court later this month, Solani said.

Police also found five litres of wine on the passenger's seat of Ntshona's car.

Ntshona supported former deputy health minister Nozizwe Madlala-Routledge in her view that there was a crisis at the Frere Hospital and wrote a letter to President Thabo Mbeki about the situation.

The Saturday Star reported that Ntshona was arrested in June for the same offence.

Her arrest last week resulted in the postponement of a health department disciplinary hearing against her. - Sapa
