The state closed its case in the murder trial of former Hard Livings gang boss Rashied Staggie yesterday after calling only one witness.

Though Staggie's advocate Koos Louw immediately applied for his client's discharge, Cape high court judge Nathan Erasmus rejected this.

Louw said he was surprised by the brevity of the state's case, and asked for a postponement to "consider the road ahead".

Staggie is charged with murdering Mogamat Ryklief. - Sapa
