The South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) believes everyone, including pregnant schoolgirls, has a right to an education.
But its spokesman, Jon Lewis, says the lack of resources makes it impossible for pregnant schoolgirls to attend classes.
"We believe the department should ensure that schools are equipped with medical equipment to assist pregnant pupils at schools," he said last week.
The Education Department allows schoolgirls to attend classes until the seventh month of their pregnancy. They may return to class a month after giving birth.
Parents and teachers are encouraged to help the home-bound schoolgirl with her lessons while she's absent from class.
