Regardless of which specific test is used, condom-testing involves taking a sample of several condoms from a batch and calculating the fraction that pass the test.

The health department Condoms Specifications 2003-2005 is based on the World Health Organisation's condoms specification of 1998, according to the SABS.

According to the SABS, a batch of condoms can be sold if a maximum of five condoms per 200 sample in a lot size of between 35000 to 150 000 fail the test. If six or more condoms in a sample can fail the test, the lot size is rejected.

Similarly, a batch of condoms can be sold if a maximum of seven condoms per 315 sample in a lot size of between 150001 to 500000 fail the test. If eight or more condoms in the same sample can fail the test, the lot size is rejected.
