Sport and corporate big guns swung their woods, chased the pins and putted good and bad in the name of charity at Sedibeng's Emfuleni Golf Estate on Friday.
The event, which was hosted by the local Knights Golf Club in Vanderbijlpark under the chairmanship of David Mooi, raised R20000 for the Thabo Vuyo School.
Later on in the day a further R20000, which also went to this school for mentally challenged learners, was raised at an auction.
The Nights club and Thabo Voyo also seized the opportunity to pay homage to Molefi Oliphant, a member of the club, for his contribution to sport in the area, particularly his role in ensuring that South Africa won the 2010 Fifa World Cup bid.
Oliphant, who is also one of the people who pioneered fundraising campaigns for the school for more than a decade, was given special gifts for his efforts.
In response, Oliphant, president of the South African Football Association and deputy president of the Confederation of African Football, thanked both the club and the school for recognising the fact that he was part of a team that eventually proved local football to be the winner in bringing the World Cup finals to our country.
Mooi was full of praise for those who took part in the fundraising golf day, especially companies that sponsored the event like Absa, SA Breweries, Phumelela Professional Engineers, Worldwide Sports, Vodacom, Megapro, City Power, Graphtech and Johnny Walker.
"I have no doubt that the success of this year's golf day will stay long in the minds of all those who enjoyed the day with us," said Mooi. "Golf is a great game and platform for people to network and share ideas."
