Domestic travellers flying on South Africa's three low-cost airlines accounted for the major growth in the number of passengers passing through the country's airports.

The Airports Company of SA (Acsa) said it had experienced an annual growth of 10,8percent in passenger traffic to 16,5million departing passengers annually. Domestic volumes rose at an average annual rate of close to 12 percent.

"The entry of low-cost carriers into the market where a growing number of the population could not afford air travel in the past has increased passenger volumes significantly," said Acsa's managing director Monhla Hlahla.
