Spokesman Lunga Ngqengelele said this decision followed a meeting in Johannesburg which addressed an educational recovery process following the recent strike by thousands of teachers.
The meeting at OR Tambo International Airport was attended by Education Minister Naledi Pandor, provincial education MECs and senior officials. The CEM agreed that further communication with unions and all other stakeholders on the 'Occupation Specific Dispensation' and what it sought to achieve, would improve the remuneration of teachers, while ensuring continuing improvement in the quality of education.
The education department had received reports from all provinces on their strategies and recovery plans.
"These plans are tailored to intensify the learner support strategies developed in the national plan," said Pandor.
Pandor has expressed her appreciation for the provincial plans and was confident that it would assist in promoting the recovery of lost learning opportunities.
Learning from national and provincial reports, the meeting also agreed that study mates and other supplements, which were currently distributed to schools as part of the recovery plan, should be made permanent features of the education system. - Sapa.
