Police in KwaZulu-Natal yesterday destroyed more than 6000 firearms, including AK47s that were recovered during various operations and firearms that were handed over in terms of the Firearms Control Act.

The objective of the initiative was to ensure that the firearms do not get circulated in the community.

"The proliferation of firearms in KwaZulu- Natal is of extreme concern to all of us.

"We have put into operation a comprehensive plan that is aimed at the recovery of unlicensed firearms and ammunition that can be described as the single biggest contributor to violent crimes," said police spokesman Phindile Hadebe.
