MAPUTO - A donor conference arranged to repair damage caused by Cyclone Favio in February raised only about R1million last week.

Radio Mozambique reported on Sunday that the municipality of Vilankulo had hoped to raise about R7 million at a fundraising meeting held in the coastal tourist town.

Vilankulo mayor Sulemane Amugi told the station that he expected to receive more money from pledges made by some of the prospective donors who attended the conference.

More than 300000 people were affected by the cyclone. It hit the town on February 23 with winds measuring 200kmh coming through the Mozambique Channel.

Among the landmarks destroyed were markets, a teacher training college, a district hospital and the town's jail.

Vilankulo is Mozambique's prime tourist destination and the main gateway to the Bazaruto Archipelago.

Authorities hope to rebuild the town before the start of the tourism season in August. - Sapa
