Sacred Heart College, one of the top private schools in Johannesburg, was closed yesterday.

Security guards at the gate said pupils were advised not to come to school.

"They are coming back tomorrow," said a guard yesterday.

At another high school in the northern suburbs, security was beefed up as about 300 pupils came to write their exams. Only pupils writing exams were present.

The principal, who asked to remain anonymous for fear of intimidation, said: "The police said that they would be available to assist us in any emergencies.

"While we support the strike, we have to ensure the safety of our pupils who come to school," the principal said.
