The Democratic Alliance (DA) has come out against the government's plan to establish a single public service.

This comes after the South African Local Government Association decided at its recent conference to support the plan.

But the DA said if the plan was implemented it would create a mega-bureaucracy and have a negative effect on local authorities' ability to deliver basic services.

"The ANC thinks service delivery problems will be solved by having a minister responsible for everything. But, unfortunately, ministers never accept responsibility when things go wrong," said DA spokesman Isaac Julies.

The party also questioned the plan because of the differences in salaries between national and local government departments. Julies said achieving pay parity would be difficult "as the metros have demonstrated".
