Youths killed a man and robbed passengers on the overnight Trans-Natal train between Durban and Johannesburg, police said yesterday.

Superintendent Phindile Radebe said six youths, believed to be aged between 16 and 17, boarded the train near Estcourt.

They harassed passengers and robbed them of money, cellphones and other belongings in the early hours of yesterday morning.

One man was shot and his body thrown off the train.

A passenger who had concealed his cellphone dialled 112 and alerted the police.

"When the train pulled into the station at Ladysmith the police were waiting and a shoot-out ensued in which two of the youths were injured," Radebe said.
