Sowetan can reveal that issues over money caused kwaito star Brown Dash to leave TS Records last week.

It emerged yesterday that Brown Dash, whose real name is Siphiwe Mpamile, owes a substantial amount of money to the taxman which the company allegedly refused to pay.

After leaving TS Records, the popular musician then signed with DJ Cleo's Will of Steel Production. But he was fired less than 24 hours later after he denied on national television that he had signed with the company.

A source close to the singer insisted yesterday that Brown Dash was having trouble with the taxman and decided to jump ship because TS Records were not interested in helping him.

"He has been having problems with the tax man for quite some time because the record company inflated his sales," said the source, who asked to remain anonymous.

"He is also still owed by the company for gigs he did in the past.

"Brown Dash has played many gigs but he does not have anything to show for it," the source said.

Thembinkosi Nciza, TS Records co-owner, was cagey when approached by Sowetan yesterday.

"As far as I am concerned this chapter is closed and we have moved on. We will continue to develop other artists," said Nciza.

DJ Cleo, boss of Will of Steel, would not be drawn into discussing Mpamile's sacking.
