Police yesterday launched a manhunt for four awaiting-trial prisoners who escaped from cells at the Paddock police station, on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast, this week.

The four men broke free on Monday after cutting cell bars. They are facing charges of murder, attempted murder, robbery and possession of dagga.

One of the escapees is Wade Schoeman, who allegedly robbed and killed Edwin Jeffrey White, 76, in Umbilo Road, Durban, last year.

He allegedly stabbed White in the chest and struck him on the head with a golf club and an ashtray before fleeing in White's car with a television set, a cellphone and cash.

Two days later Schoeman allegedly killed Jonathan Clyde Durant, 45, with a hammer. Durant's car, his television, his cellphone and cash are believed to have been stolen during the incident.

White's car, a Ford Sierra, was found abandoned in Point Road, Durban.

Schoeman, 21, is said to be a drug user and is considered dangerous. - Sapa
