A total of 167 athletes registered for the first leg of the Yellow Pages Ultimate Athletes meet (formerly known as the Athletics South Africa challenge series), which starts today at 6pm in Secunda, Mpumalanga.

Said Phiwe Tsoletsane, Athletics South Africa communication manager: "All athletes participating in the meet are buoyed by the individual prize money at stake injected by Yellow Pages.

"Athletes who will break South African records in the meet and those who will be selected to participate in the World Championships will each pocket R30000 and R10000, respectively."

Athletes will be out to qualify for the South African team that will participate in the International Association of Athletic Federation (IAAF) World Championships in Japan in September.

Mpumalanga will be hoping that the likes of Bongani Mbosi (3000m), Vusi Nkosi (discus) and Xolani Mahlangu (triple jump) hoist the provincial flag.
