The Scorpions' deputy director was fined R8000 for driving under the influence of alcohol this week.

But R5000 of David Damerell's fine was suspended for three years.

Damerell entered into a plea and sentencing agreement at the Pietermaritzburg regional court on Tuesday.

He admitted that on April 1 2004 he drove on the N3 near Camperdown while under the influence of alcohol.

"As a prosecutor, I am aware of the dangers of drinking and driving, and when I am at social functions where I consume alcohol I usually make arrangements so that I do not have to drive.

"The incident was a pure aberration," he said. - Sapa
