Police in KwaZulu-Natal will be out in full force over the festive season.

Apart from tracking down drunken drivers and unroadworthy cars, police will be clamping down on shebeens.

This emerged yesterday during a press conference with the KwaZulu-Natal MEC for transport community safety and liaison, Bheki Cele and the provincial SAPS commissioner Hamilton Ngidi.

Cele said shebeens without a licence would be shut down and the owners prosecuted.

He said integrated security planning for the festive season had started months ago between the SAPS, SANDF, Metro police and the road traffic inspectorate.

"There will be intensive air, foot, vehicle and horse patrols at tourist destinations. Rapid response teams will be placed at strategic places to deal with any kind of situation."

Security will be beefed up at all popular tourist destinations in KwaZulu-Natal, including the Durban beachfront.
