A group of between 40 and 50 people converged on the house of a man arrested in connection with a murder in northern KwaZulu-Natal and burnt it down, police said yesterday.

Superintendent Jay Naicker said the man was arrested on Wednesday in connection with the murder of a 65-year-old woman in the Kwansame area near Mtubatuba earlier this month.

Shortly after his arrest an angry group of local residents set the man's house alight. Nobody was in the house at the time.

Naicker said: "People must not take the law into their own hands. We could have arrested the wrong person."

He said police would liaise with amakhosi and local structures to prevent such events. - Sapa
