The retrenchments have already begun, said chief executive Khaya Ngqula.
Though revenue was up, SAA had to cut down on costs and its new low-cost airline Mango had nothing to do with the retrenchments, he said.
SAA spokesman Jacqui O' Sullivan said staff were informed of the decision on Wednesday. - Sapa
