Earlier this year I spent three weeks driving and walking alone in the Zimbabwe of my youth and not once did I experience any criminal incidents or feeling of insecurity.

Yet I definitely would not feel as safe, walking alone on the Durban beach front or along a Table Mountain footpath.

Could it be that the death penalty in place in Zimbabwe, though very rarely used, is a deterrent against murder and violent rape after all?
